Wellness Tip #5

Nutritional Facts Label - High Fiber & Low Sugar is Best! (Part 1)

Nutritional Facts Label

High Fiber and Low Sugar is Best

When reading the Nutritional Facts Label, focus on foods high in fiber and low in sugar.

Most of us need to eat more fiber. It helps maintain healthy digestion and reduces the risk of certain cancers. The recommended daily fiber intake is 25-38 grams, but the average American consumes only 15 grams per day.

Most of us need to eat much less sugar. To help visualize how much sugar is in our food, remember that 4 grams of sugar equals 1 packet or 1 teaspoon of sugar. So, when we consume a drink with 48 grams of sugar, we are actually putting 12 packets of sugar into our body!  Yuck!
