Fruits and Vegetables: Winning the Veggie Fight
One of the most common concerns parents have during annual check-ups is how picky their kids are about eating vegetables (and some fruits). This pickiness is often caused by the bitter taste of some vegetables, but it can also be anything from the texture, to the smell, to "It looked at me funny!"
Here are a few proven ways to get our kids to eat more fruits and vegetables:
Offer a dip such as dressing, hummus, salsa, or nut butter.
- When sitting down for a meal, serve the vegetables first before the main course. (They are more likely to eat it when they are really hungry!) Then, offer their favorite fruit as dessert.
- Help kids grow their own vegetables. When they see where the veggies come from, they are more likely to eat them.
- Give kids the option to have either one or two vegetables for dinner; none is an option. Kids like making their own decisions, so facilitate a decision that is a “win” for everyone.
- Set a good example and eat the vegetables ourselves! Kids are watching our lead, and if we lead with healthy eating habits, they will follow.
- Involve the kids in meal prep and show them how to include fruits and veggies in each meal.
